Exit Plan

After Uni has finished I will be applying for career jobs right away but whilst waiting I will continue polishing my portfolio, and having a job somewhere part time, until the opportunity arises.

In the future I would like to start my own studio again with a few friends once we have a few years industry experience, if that does not happen a senior or lead artist in a Games Studio would be amazing too.

Preferably I would like to go back to Jagex when I finish University - but if that does not fall through then I would love to work at Guerrila Games or Splash Damage.

However in the mean time this will be my next 3D Environment project.

How to get noticed within the industry?

Polycount
Artstation
Cgstudentawards
Lunchcrunch – facebook
UE4 Forum

These are all very reliable sources to get your work out there for exposure and feedback.

Polycount: Almost every user is a 3D artist or works in the games industry somehow.

Artstation: Great community of very talented artists, similar to Polycount alot of video game artists here.

CGstudentAwards: Great for getting your name out there, could win an internship along with getting your uni out there for some exposure.

Lunchrunch: Lots of Video game artists use this page to show off their work and give critique.

UE4 Forums: I use UE4 alot and my most recent environment was made using their engine! So why not show them it.

Final Showreel

Here is the final show reel (the ending is an environment is something I am planning on doing later after Christmas, my next big project)

Future plans for my website

I am using Liam Tart's Portfolio as an example simply because its a very clean and nice layout, you can see he has his resume, his email, his phone number his linked in and polycount on his website, this is very good for potential employers,  in the future (January 2015) I will be releasing my very own website similar to this wit the URL:

www.alfred3d.co.uk or www.alfredgolovanov.co.uk - not sure which yet

Art Station

Artstation is an amazing portfolio I almost count it as my second portfolio of choice as its like a community hub, it has a great layout and look to it too, people can leave comments and feedback and you can view the amount of likes and views you get on your particular piece of work.

Navigating around Artstation is easy and no hassle at all, and if your bored at looking at your own stuff theres TONS of inspiration on their main site.

Portfolio thoughts

So I thought I would talk about what needs to be in a portfolio:

Well first of all you need your art to be very clear and visible right from the very first click.
Their should not be any clutter or nonsense making it hard to navigate around your site, that's a pain for anyone trying to view your stuff.

It's also  good to be different, designing something original sets you apart from the crowd.

You should also have an about me page and a contact me page, along with a blog of where you post your work in progress or things that you find interesting (stuff that is related to games art but is not good enough yet to be on your portfolio)

So this is the standard layout of most 3D Artists very cool sleek and easy to navigate, banners to represent the main photo of your work, and the stars on the top right to indicate whether its new or not.

CV & Cover Letter planning

I'm going to start with the cover letter to a games company - as I have had the experience of writing one I will give you an example that managed to land me a job in the games industry - the key is to be passionate and speak about what  you know.

Cover Letter Junior Artist (OldSchool Runescape)
Hello Jagex,

First of all I’d like to say that Runescape has been the most played game in my life, since it first came out in 2001, I have always been voting and helping out with the community as a whole for the future of Runescape, and personally bringing back Old School was one of the best decisions Jagex could have made.

Jagex is one of the top MMORPG companies out there, you guys have always been risky with new games, or new updates, which I love and change is always good.
A chance to work with you guys would be a dream come true, I literally know everything about Old School Runescape, whether it be quests, items, gear, skills, ask me anything and I’ll know it.
I have a wide knowledge of 3d and texturing as a whole, low poly modelling and hand painted texturing are one of my specialities, especially as its old school, low poly and hand texturing were one of the first things I learnt back in college whilst studying Games Development. I have also learnt a lot of animation, rigging, high poly modelling, from Uni, I am studying BA Computer games Modelling & Animation at Derby.

I have worked as a QA tester before on the Sonic ALL-Stars Transformers game, and I learnt a lot about bug fixing, bug finding, report management and overall just a feedback of the game between the developers and myself.
I have played almost every MMO out there at the current moment, the latest was the new Skyrim Online Beta, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Thank you for taking the time to read my cover letter and hopefully my CV, I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
Please check out my portfolio on http://alfred3d.carbonmade.com.

Alfred.

I do not have a template for cover letters as I treat it as a genuine letter I myself am writing to the possible employer, I want it to feel as genuine as possible and not to send mutliple templates around different companies.

Not only did I do Art for Jagex but I was also able to participate in weekly Q & A’s infront of thousands of people on Twitch.tv it was a great way to communicate with the games fan base and ask what they wanted implemented in the game, I found myself conversing with players on twitter asking for feedback on all of my work.

This time I was placed on my own and was given a set of tasks, some of the tasks included completing different story modes and recording data, also a lot of multiplayer was played and tested, many of my bug finds were important to the games progress.

Key Skills: Working in a team efficiently, providing feedback, and finding problems and solving them.

I made this CV after downloading alot of other 3D artists CV's I'm not sure whether I should keep non related games industry things in my CV but it shows what skills I have learnt.

Showreel Planning

So after receiving some feedback of Jon I went off and started planning my Showreel.

There were a few things I needed to write down before I could start on the Showreel:

What do I want to specialize in:

I would love to be an environment/prop artist simply because:

Love creating sets and scenes of different genres and themes – making a virtual story.
Exciting feeling when it all comes together.
Being an environment artist means that I could do props and lighting and level dressing.

So obviously my portfolio had to show this.

I started looking around and researching other peoples showreels.
Some of my favourites are:

All of these show reels have similar things in common a very catchy song and a minute and a half length of video time.

There are alot of break down shots too which is quite important to have in your show reel but not a necessity, they both also have their email, website, profession and name at the end of the video - something to always put in your show reel if potential employees are viewing your video.

For my showreel I have decided on showing my latest environment (hand in for A3D) and some of the props that I made for the environment - I will also edit it to include future things that I am thinking of working on.

A big change in GTA 5 before and after shots - updating an already exisiting game

http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2014/11/13/gifs-compare-old-new-gta-5

Several gifs of how the developers at RockStar managed to change alot of the already existing asset and upgrade the graphics to make it even more beautiful.

This could motivate people to bring their old Environments for older versioned engines to the newer ones like UE4 and make them next gen.

WEEK 9 - Recreating interviews with students

We were told to recreate an interview with a 3 man team, we had to choose a job at a studio that we wanted to apply for in the future, then our friend would ask us questions.

I chose Guerrilla Games in Cambridge as an example, Prop artist.

I was asked a series of questions which I tryed to answer to my full ability.

I then asked questions to a character artists who wanted to work at Rebellion as a Junior Character Artist.
Here were some example questions I asked him:

Are you able to work within a predefined art style?

Are you able to deliver work to a high quality standard within time constraints?

Do you show enthusiasm and the drive to learn new processes.

What tool could you not live without?

Name a time where you took control of a situation with games development

What game inspired you to come into the games industry??

How do you think you could improve 'example of work' if you were given 1 more month

Why do you want to work here?

What games are you playing at the moment

Whats the best game of all time and why

What will you bring to the team? why do we need you?

How do you feel aobut crunching?

In 5 years where do u want to be?

What do you do in your own time to extend your skills?

Whats your favourite bit of character art?

What programmes do you use most commonly for character creation?

Some of these questions also applied to me.
This was a very useful task to the hard questions that may be asked in the future.

Working at Jagex

So how did I end up at my favourite games studio?

Well, after taking my third year out to make a video game with some friends, we came across a slight problem where one of our programmers had left and we couldn't carry on with the game.

At the time I was playing a game called Old School Runescape, (I have been playing Runescape since 2001) and they had a job going for a 3d Artist, so it was litterally fate and I applied for it there and then.

Unfortunately I couldn't do part time and finish off my degree whilst working at Jagex, so I decided to come back finish my degree and hopefully return then after graduation.

Whilst working there I had a great experience and learned alot from the artists and employees there, I was working within a small team so that had its beneficial side to it.

Working within a small team was great as ideas and development floated around endlessly, and not needing to go and talk to any of the senior or art directors was great as we could make art how ever we pleased as long as the player base was happy, this was a great time saver and we could do alot more work this way. Almost as if it was a little indie team.

I learned how ideas turn into concept, then development then finally ingame.

Old School Runescape is a community driven game, so asking what the players wanted was an essential piece of the development cycle, using twitter and social media kept the players interested in what the developers where actually doing, kind of like an update page.

We also had Twitch streams every Thursday at 5pm for an hour this was a Q&A session with the developers so the players could ask them anything they wanted.
http://en-gb.twitch.tv/runescape/profile

I also started using Max which I had to learn in under month luckily it was alot like Maya, so I got to grips with it pretty fast, Max has alot of cool functions Maya doesnt have.

We also used perforce to keep all the work we did in organised folders, it also meant that we could update revisions or roll back to old revisions if we had a bug in a current update.

I had worked on alot of updates, from 3d models to animations to graphics to concepts, it was an all round generalist job. Here is some of my work, approved by the community and put into game, the most fun I had was bringing back the Corporeal Beast boss into the game, alot of the players loved this update.

Here is my Twitter that I used to communicate to all the players of OldScape, good social media to know what the players wanted along with Reddit.

Quixel update

So I am an avid user of the Quixel suite and the artists manage to impress me so well, Georgian Avasilcutei has managed ultra realism with this one, keeps me inspired and motivated.

A nice tutorial on how to make proper metalness using Quixel, nice bakes and breakdowns!

AC Unity Art Dump looks amazing!

http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144111

Some people who have worked on AC unity have posted up their Art, and I'm not going to lie it looks great! Possibly some of the best Video Game work I've seen to date!

Hope they keep this thread updated!

GTA 5 First person! :O

http://kotaku.com/yes-you-should-play-the-new-version-of-gta-v-1659433742

GTA V in first person looks amazing just take a look at all these screenshots, clever how RockStar have decided to do something different and make even more sales!

I personally have not been able to play GTA 5 yet I am still awaiting it to come onto the PC, but GTA 5 is probably the worlds first real like life simulator.

People complaining about bugs I witnessed none - AC unity

http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/ubisoft-reveals-assassins-creed-unity-patch-3-notes/

So I have had the chance to play AC Unity, the art is amazing, but their have been alot of complaints.

Alot of people have complaining about bugs and glitches within the game, even Kotaku have written up a report on the game pretty much saying how bad it is, I totally disagree, such a good game!

Leaf Generator and PolyCount recap

Awesome leaf generator, shows how detailed next gen is becoming.

I may ask to use this in my dissertation idea, of making ultra realistic environments.

Awesome Polycount pictures posted up this month, some cool environment and prop stuff.

I liked this because I was also making props for the chivalry contest, this was probably one of the best submissions
